Anton Chekhov – The Complete Short Novels (Translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky), February 2008, 9/10.
Written by Anton Chekhov. Published by Everyman’s Library.
How does one review Chekhov on a post-it? Obviously these were going to be stunning stories, and the for most part they lived up to the hype. While some seemed as though they could have been written in the past few years, even the older-feeling stories felt contemporary. Even when little was happening the story-lines moved along nicely, and in the faster moving stories the finer details only served to amplify the pace rather than bog things down. For the most part I found these stories very enjoyable and deserving of their reputation.
